When should I call 911 for the fire department?
You should call 911 for the fire department whenever you feel that there is an actual or impending fire or related emergency. It is always to better to be safe than sorry.

When should I call 911 for an ambulance?
If you have a true medical emergency, you should always call 911 for an ambulance.

Who can I talk to concerning a fire code violation?
If you have question concerning the fire code, or if you need to report a violation of the fire code contact the Fire Marshal office at 517-483-4087.

How can I obtain a copy of an EMS or FIRE report?
Please call the LFD Administration office at: 517-483-4200.

How can I become a firefighter?
To become a firefighter for the City of Lansing you must be a high school graduate or GED equivalent and have no felony convictions. Does the Lansing Fire Department charge for its services?
There is no fee for our fire and rescue services. However, the Fire Department does charge for emergency ambulance calls, response to vehicle accidents, and EMS-related incidents. All or part of this cost may be covered by your insurance program. You should check with your insurance provider to see if you are covered for emergency ambulance costs. How many people work for the Fire Department?
There are about 160 people in the Fire Suppression Division. These are the people who ride the fire trucks and ambulances. There are an additional 35 - 40 staff members assigned to our other divisions, such as Fire Prevention, Training, Emergency Management, Administration and Maintenance/Alarm. All of these people play a crucial role in our goal of providing the best possible protection for the lives and property of the citizens of Lansing.

What type of schedule do firefighters work?
Firefighters and emergency medical personnel assigned to Fire Suppression duties work 24-hour shifts, from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. When not responding to calls, the firefighters train, either in the station or at the LFD Training Academy, maintain equipment and practice skills. They also support special events and function in the city.

How do I get a Recreational Fire Permit?
A permit can be purchased from the Lansing Fire Department Administration Office located at 120 E. Shiawassee St. For more information Call 517-483-4200. It is illegal to have open burning in the City of Lansing without a permit.

How do I schedule a fire safety presentation?
LFD personnel are available to give fire safety presentations to classes or groups. For more information, contact the Fire Prevention Division at 517-483-4087.

My child won't stop playing with fire. How can I get through to them?
The Fire Marshal's office has developed a program to work with the families of children who start fires or play with matches. For more information on this problem, contact Fire Prevention at 517-483-4200.

How do I report a fire hazard?
If you see an immediate life-threatening hazard such as a fire, downed power lines, or hazardous chemical spills, call 911. If you have a question about whether something is safe or legal, or if you want to report a fire code violation, contact the Fire Marshal's office at 517-483-4087.
