Judge Cynthia Ward (WEB)


Judge Cynthia M. Ward was elected to the 54-A District Court on November 6, 2018; she will serve a six-year term. Judge Ward received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University and her Juris Doctor degree from Villanova University School of Law.

Judge Ward moved to Lansing, Michigan in 2002 to join the faculty at Cooley Law School, where she taught in the Sixty Plus, Inc. Elderlaw Clinic. She was named Assistant Dean of Students in September 2007, a role she served until August 2014. Judge Ward was conferred Distinguished Professor Emerita status in 2014 by the WMU Cooley Law School Board of Directors. Judge Ward has also served as Associate Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the Women and AIDS Clinic at Rutgers Law School-Newark. There she provided civil legal services to women and children affected/infected by HIV/AIDS.

Judge Ward was an experienced civil rights attorney and has several published opinions. She has also received several awards and honors for her work as an advocate for women with HIV. Prior to that experience, she was a staff attorney with New Jersey Protection and Advocacy, Inc. (now Disability Rights New Jersey). She also served as a law clerk with American Baptist Churches, Inc.

Judge Ward is licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Michigan and is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. Judge Ward is active in the Lansing community, having previously served on the board for the Lansing Area AIDS Network, the City of Lansing Park Board, and as a commissioner for the Lansing Board of Water & Light. She also provided pro bono assistance to the homeless through Cooley’s Homeless Assistance and Prevention Project.
