Mayor Andy Schor Welcomes New City Treasurer

Mayor Andy Schor today announced his appointment of Desiree A. Kirkland as Lansing’s next Treasurer and Income Tax Administrator. Ms. Kirkland will begin her role as Treasurer on Monday, September 28, 2020.  

“Desiree Kirkland is a tremendously qualified financial professional and has also been an active community leader in the City for decades. I’m thrilled to appoint her as the City Treasurer, and welcome her to my executive team,” said Mayor Schor. "Her years of professional experience at both the state and local level uniquely positions her for this role and will allow her to be an effective administrator from day one." 

Desiree has a long career in both the public and private sectors. She previously served as a Grant Accountant within the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Contract and Financial Manager at the Ingham County Health Department, and the Business Administrator for Tabernacle of David Church. She’s also served as an Internal Auditor at the Michigan Supreme Court, Chief Deputy Treasurer with Ingham County and served as an Accounting Instructor at Lansing Community College. 

“Considering others with kindness is especially important in the world of finance and funding where stressors can be high," said Kirkland. "I am excited about this new opportunity to live each day choosing kindness as we accomplish important goals for the people of the City of Lansing.”   

Desiree earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Ferris State University, Master’s degree in Christian Leadership from Grand Canyon University and she is currently pursuing a MBA from Davenport University.  She is a Certified Public Funds Investment Manager and a Michigan Certified Professional Treasurer.
