Mayor Andy Schor Appoints Nicholas Tate to Serve as Deputy Mayor for Operations and Chief of Staff

(LANSING) – Mayor Andy Schor today announced that Nicholas Tate will serve as the City of Lansing’s Deputy Mayor for Operations and Chief of Staff effective July 1, 2020. Tate will oversee all internal operations including management of Mayor’s Office staff and Department Directors, as well as resolving day-to-day issues, including finance, labor, human resources and others that arise within city government.

“Nik Tate has been on my team for a year and a half now and has shown exemplary problem solving and leadership skills. I have appointed Nik to Deputy Mayor for Operations in order to ensure that my office and all City departments are running as efficiently as possible. I am making changes within my office to continue to improve the way that we serve Lansing residents,” said Mayor Schor.  

Samantha Harkins will continue to serve as Deputy Mayor for Policy Initiatives and Executive Assistant to the Mayor. Harkins will focus on proactive localized initiatives, including nurturing local partnerships and projects, legislative work and strategic economic and community development projects, as well as continue her duties as the Executive Assistant to the Mayor under the City Charter. 

Tate started working for the City of Lansing as Assistant City Attorney in 2017 and moved to Mayor Schor’s Office in 2018 initially serving as Chief Labor Negotiator. In 2019, he was also appointed to serve as the City’s Chief Administrative Officer. Prior to working for the City of Lansing, Tate served as a Deputy District Attorney in the Office of the Los Angeles District Attorney, as Deputy Staff Judge Advocate in the 311th Mission Support Element in West Los Angeles while the 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command was deployed to Afghanistan and as an Assistant Brigade Judge Advocate in the 304th Sustainment Brigade in Riverside, California among other leadership roles. 

Tate earned his Juris Doctorate from Howard Law School in Washington D.C. and his Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from Texas A&M University. He currently serves as Senior Defense Council (Dublin, CA Region) for the 22nd Legal Operational Detachment in the United States Army Reserve.
