Mayor Andy Schor Names Daryl Green Lansing’s Police Chief

Green, Daryl Captain

Mayor Andy Schor today announced the recommendation of the appointment of Captain Daryl Green, Ph.D., as the new Chief of the Lansing Police Department. The Police Board of Commissioners will review Mayor Schor’s recommendation at their meeting on August 20, 2019.

“Captain Green brings many years of experience and expertise to the Lansing Police Department and it is my recommendation that he leads the department moving forward,” said Mayor Schor. “We know that we already have the best candidate for the job in the department, so we will not conduct a search to find someone new. I’m confident that Captain Green will continue to be a great asset to Lansing and its residents.”

Captain Green has been with the Lansing Police Department since 1997 and has worked up through the ranks, currently serving as Captain of the Patrol Division. He has been instrumental in identifying strategic and practical goals, and developing solutions and policies around public safety. Captain Green has experience supervising all major police divisions.

“I am honored that Mayor Schor has recommended my appointment to become the next person to lead the Capital City’s finest,” said Captain Green. “I do not take this profession or position lightly and I will remain committed to strengthening the department’s relationship with our community.”

Captain Green has served in the United States Navy for over 18 years, currently as a Lieutenant in Naval Intelligence. Recently, he was deployed to Navy Central Command Maritime Forces in the Middle East and is credited with military service during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve.

Captain Green earned his Ph.D. in Public Administration from Western Michigan University. He earned his Master’s in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University and his Bachelor’s in Political Science from Temple University. Additionally, he is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Class 275. Captain Green and his wife Malinda have three children.

Chief Michael Yankowski announced his retirement after serving Lansing for 25 years on July 9th, 2019.

“I have known and worked with Daryl for 22 years and I’m more than confident that he will continue to lead the department towards greatness. He is one of the best-prepared incoming police chiefs this department will have ever seen. The future of the LPD is in good hands with Daryl,” said Chief Yankowski.

Upon Chief Yankowski’s retirement, Green will first begin his role as acting Police Chief. According to City Charter, the Police Board of Commissioners must review and approve Mayor Schor’s appointment prior to his swearing-in as Chief.
