Participatory Budget Nights to Begin November 13

The City of Lansing announces four participatory budget nights will be held between November 13 and December 6. Each event will give citizens the opportunity to better understand the City’s budget process and share their thoughts on budget priorities.

Mayor Andy Schor, Department of Neighborhoods and Citizen Engagement Director Andi Crawford and Finance Director Angie Bennett will attend each event. Participatory budget nights are held to empower citizens to come together and provide input on the City’s budget priorities.

“We’re beginning to prepare our budget, which will be program based,” said Mayor Schor. “This is a great opportunity for the public to learn more about the City’s budget and get involved in decision making.”

The participatory budget nights are part of furthering Mayor Schor’s goal of maintaining transparency in City operations and encouraging civic engagement.

“These events are just one of the many opportunities we’ve created to increase citizen engagement,” said Crawford. “Events like this help citizens understand how they can influence decisions of the City.”

More budget nights will be held early next year for citizens to provide further input on the Fiscal Year 2020 budget which begins July 1, 2019.

Four participatory budget nights will be held at the following locations from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.:

  • November 13 at the Letts Community Center - 1220 W Kalamazoo Street

  • November 28 at the Foster Community Center - 200 N Foster Avenue

  • November 29 at Kelly’s Downtown - 220 S Washington Square
  • December 6 at the Schmidt Center - 5825 Wise Road

Participatory budget nights will address only the City budget. The City of Lansing also offers free, one-on- one financial counseling services at the Lansing Financial Empowerment Center. Schedule an appointment with a professional financial counselor online at or call 517-483-4550.
