2017 Halloween Safety Tips

The Lansing Police Department offers these tips for staying safe on Halloween.

Before you go out:

  • Map out your trick or treat route early.
  • Establish rendezvous points for your party in case anyone is separated from the group.
  • Pick costumes with bright colors or add safety reflector tape to their costumes.
  • Always have an adult accompany younger children.
  • Go over safety rules with your children/group (for example: never entering strangers homes, always staying with your group or travel buddy, do not eat candy before it is inspected by a parent).
  • Use sidewalks when provided.
  • Walk up driveways and walkways (do not cut through backyards, alleys, parks or heavily wooded areas).
  • Use crosswalks when provided and remind kids to look before crossing.
  • If no sidewalk is provided, walk against traffic so you can see cars approaching.
  • Only go to houses that are well-lit.

Halloween night checklist:

  • Head count before and after trick or treating
  • Cellphones (working properly and charged, program all numbers of participating parties)
  • Flashlight/Glow sticks
  • Reflective tape
  • Route review
  • Safety rules review
  • Rendezvous point review
  • End time – meet up location
  • Candy inspections (throw away: candy with ripped or open wrappers, fresh fruit, homemade candy or treats)

In an emergency, call 911 or yell for help.
