Recreational Fire Permits

Recreational Fire Permits are available to purchase for $50. After October 1, permits are prorated to $25. Permits are valid April 1 - March 31. We now offer three ways to apply and pay: online, mail, and in person.

To renew your permit by mail complete, sign, print and return the Recreational Fire Permit Application along with the fee of $50. Make check or money order payable to City of Lansing and mail to:

Burning Is Permitted On

Please remember the following requirements when applying for the recreational burn permit:
  • Burning is allowed Monday - Thursday 5:00 PM -10:00 PM, Friday 5:00 PM - 12:00 AM and 8:00 AM - 12:00 AM Saturday and Sunday. 
  • You may burn on the following holidays from 8:00 AM - 12:00 AM (midnight): Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, MLK Jr. Day.
Permit Requirements
  • Permit is strictly for recreational purposes only.
  • Burning area must be 3 ft. or less in diameter and 2 ft. or less in height.
  • Burning of building material or non-wood items is strictly prohibited.
  • Burning of brush, leaves, grass or trash is strictly prohibited.
  • The fire must be continuously attended.
  • A water source must be readily available.
  • Fires in approved containers are required to be at least 15 ft. from any structure. 
  • Fires in an in-ground pt are required to be 25 ft. from any structure.
  • The Fire Marshal Division reserves the right to revoke any Recreational Burn Permit for violation of any of the above regulations and or Fire Code.
  • Issued permits shall be kept on the premises designated therein at all times and shall be readily available for inspection.
  • Violation of permit conditions may result in a $150 civil infraction ticket and/or termination of the permit - no warnings.
