Placard Types

Red Placard

A structure determined to be Unsafe will have a red placard posted on the premises. This placard will remain on the property until all violations have been corrected and all required Permits have been inspected and complied by the Building Department.  No property with an Unsafe tag shall be occupied or be allowed to have pets left in the structure.  Refer to Lansing Housing and Premises Code Section 108.1

Also any structure tagged for more than 90 days may be subject to monthly, non refundable Tag Monitoring Fees.

Pink Placard

A pink placard is used only on rental properties that do not have a valid Certificate of Compliance issued by our office. This may be because the property is not registered as a rental or our office has done an inspection and the owner has failed to comply with the necessary repairs.

While the pink does state that there will be a date that the property may be vacated, this date can be extended by request of the owner.

Occupants may pay rent into an escrow account when a Certificate of Compliance does not exist. Contact an attorney to learn about this process.

Access for Repairs & Corrections

Owner and Tenant access to Unsafe premises, in order to perform repairs or corrections to the property, may be made only between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday unless written authorization is given by the Office of Code Compliance. If it is necessary to perform work during the evenings or on weekends, an "After Hours" letter may be requested by the owner or tenant from the Code Enforcement Officer.
