Commercial Plan Review
The Building Safety Office is now performing plan reviews electronically. To begin the electronic plan review process, the Design Professional needs to be licensed in the State of Michigan and complete the "Email Packet for Design Professional Registration" listed below.
The "Design Professional In Responsible Charge Form" (DPRC) also listed below, should be completed for every project applied for. The Registered Design Professional in Responsible Charge shall be responsible for reviewing and coordinating all submittal documents prepared by others, including fire alarm, fire suppression, phased and deferred submittal items, for compatibility with the design of the building.
You will receive further information on registering electronically once you have made your request.
Due to the influx of projects in the City of Lansing, our plan review time has now been increased from 10 business days to 15 to 20 business days.
The City of Lansing enforces the 2015 Michigan Building Code (incorporating the 2015 International Building Code with State amendments) for commercial and multi-family structures. The State amendments can be found at the Bureau of Construction Codes.
New buildings and additions larger than 1,000 square feet require a site plan review as well as a Building Plan Review. Please consult the Site Plan Review page for further information.
If you would like to appeal the decision of an Inspector or plans analyst, obtain a variance from a code requirement, or use an alternative method or material, you must file an appeal with the Building Board of Appeals.
See Building Appeals (PDF) to get the application in PDF format. Print the appeals form, complete it, and submit the form including any required attachments along with the required fee (payable to "City of Lansing") to the Building Safety Office.
