A form-based code (FBC) is a zoning approach that focuses less on a building's use, and more on its form and appearance. Unlike traditional zoning, it addresses the relationship between buildings and the street, the form and mass of buildings in relationship to one another, the pattern of blocks and streets and the location and type of public spaces. The form-based code was strongly recommended in the Comprehensive Plan as the most effective way to achieve the urban form envisioned by the Lansing citizens. It addresses both land use and building form.
