After receiving a grant, the City of Lansing is planning to convert the remaining one-way streets downtown to two-way beginning tentatively in 2021. The conversion has been discussed for almost 20 years, since Shiawassee Street, Ionia Street and Washtenaw Street were converted from one-way to two-way operation.
The conversion is being done primarily to make commuting around downtown easier, seeing that it will make travel routes more direct and will reduce the amount of confusion for visitors and those less familiar with the area.
There are many anticipated benefits of this change with just a few including:
A decrease in vehicle/pedestrian conflicts
An increase of livability in the residential areas
