Ways to Reuse

In addition to what is listed above, a few other ways to reuse materials are:
  • Donate old clothing, textiles and household goods. The City of Lansing partners with Simple Recycling, who makes this process easier for residents to partake in.
  • Get a rain barrel to collect rain water in. A rain barrel is an efficient source of watering and irrigation. Rain barrels can be purchased at local garden shops, home improvement stores, or online.

  • Pick up pet waste on walks to keep E. Coli out of the rivers and waterways.
  • Limit the use of fertilizer at home to prevent algal blooms in the Great Lakes.
  • Use commercial car washes to keep soap suds and car grime from entering aquatic habitats.
  • Fix vehicle leaks to keep motor oil out of streams.

Energy Conservation

  • Switch to LED lightbulbs.
  • Set the thermostat a few degrees lower and/or consider using a programmable thermostat.
