Electric Scooters

In March 2019, Lansing City Council adopted a new electric scooter ordinance that establishes a licensing process for scooter companies and rules/regulations for companies and riders.

Scooters users may ride:

  • On city streets
  • On bike lanes throughout the city
  • Sidewalks outside of the downtown district
  • Please note: Scooters may not be ridden on sidewalks in the downtown area

Riders must park scooters upright with at least five feet of unobstructed sidewalk for pedestrians and must not interfere with:

  • Sidewalks, crosswalks or sidewalk ramps
  • Bus stops, shelters or waiting areas
  • Loading zones or handicapped parking spaces
  • Fire hydrants
  • Benches
  • Parking meters or pay stations
  • Any commercial window displays
  • Access to or from any building
  • Any bicycle racks
  • Driveways or alleys

Community members can report safety concerns, complaints or ask questions by calling the scooter company’s 24-hour customer service number. By ordinance, a response from the company to safety concerns and complaints must be completed within 2 hours of receiving the notice.
