The Public Service Department is responsible for snow removal and salting of over 400 miles of streets. Winter maintenance is a big job, and it cannot be completed without the cooperation of the City's team, residents, businesses and agencies. As a result, the City's technical staff, supervisors and equipment operators work together to continually improve the snow removal program.
Please Remember:
- Each snowfall or ice storm differs and the individual weather conditions determine when the Public Service Department starts and stops winter maintenance.
- The City of Lansing receives their information from the National Weather Service in addition to a private weather forecasting service; both of these services also impact the City’s decision.
- City trucks travel hundreds or even thousands of miles to clear the streets from a single storm event, so the City asks that residents understand that streets and sidewalks cannot be cleared instantly or perfectly, although staff certainly does make it their number one priority.
