The Building Board of Appeals hears appeals of a decision(s) made by a plan reviewer or inspector in regard to the application or interpretation of the Michigan Building Code, Michigan Residential Code, Michigan Rehabilitation Code for Existing Buildings, Fire Code, and Housing Code. It also approves the use of alternate materials or construction methods.
A construction board of appeals for each governmental subdivision enforcing the code shall be created consisting of not less than 3 nor more than 7 members, as determined by the governing body of the governmental
subdivision. Unless otherwise provided by local law or ordinance, the members of the board of appeals shall be appointed for 2-year terms by the chief executive officer of a city, village, or township and the chairperson of the
county board of commissioners of a county. A member of the board of appeals shall be qualified by experience or training to perform the duties of members of the board of appeals.
