Public Service - Wastewater Division
Wastewater Division is responsible for collection, pumping, processing and treatment of the city's wastewater, and compliance with State pollution control regulations and the National Pollutants Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program. This division, in conjunction with the Engineering Division, is also responsible for monitoring the Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) systems. The city's Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is the largest WWTP in the region with a current capacity of treating up to 50 million gallons of wastewater per day.
Wastewater Treatment Plant
The City of Lansing wastewater treatment plant located at 1625 Sunset Avenue, treats an average of 20 million gallons of wastewater each day. The facility is designed for an annual average flow of 37 Million Gallons per Day (MGD) for complete treatment. Primary treatment capacity is 107 MGD sustained flow with secondary and tertiary treatment capacity of 49 MGD.The plant receives flow from 22,000 acres in the City of Lansing, Lansing Township, and portions of Delhi Township and serves a population of 155,000.
The City operates the treatment facility under a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit issued by the Environmental Protection Agency and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. The government has mandated that we treat the wastewater to specified levels of metals, nutrients, and chemicals before discharge to the Grand River.
