The Public Service Garage, located at 525 E South St. Lansing, MI was placed in operation in 1975. The facility operates under the Operations and Maintenance Division of the Public Service Department. The main functions of the facility is to service the fleet operations for scheduled maintenance and/or repairs, purchase new vehicles and equipment for divisions within the Public Service Department, and maintain the automated fueling system and FleetTracker System for all of Public Service. The garage maintains a fleet of approximately 482 pieces of equipment including 179 trucks of various sizes ranging from light-duty pickups to heavy-duty vehicles with weight ratings up to 65,000 pounds.

The equipment utilized by the Operations and Maintenance Division consist of:

  • MOBIL TOOLS - including trailer mounted air compressors, generators ranging from 2000 watts to 125 kilowatts, hydraulic tools, trailer mounted flashing arrows, asphalt rollers, street sweepers, excavators, mowers, forklifts, pumps, asphalt paving machines, weed whips, ventilation blowers, and road graders.
  • MOUNTED EQUIPMENT - including snow plows, salt spreaders, truck mounted front end loaders, truck mounted underbody scrapers, road grader mounted bull dozer blades, scarifier blades.
  • TRACTORS - including tractor / backhoes,front end loaders, bobcats, bulldozer, and bombardier tracked vehicles.
  • TRAILERS - various sizes and uses.
    The layout of the Service Garage facility consists of an "L" shape design with a main garage floor 80 feet wide by 120 feet in length, with one drive through bay 80 feet in length. The upper section of the facility accommodates 10 service bays and a welding shop 32 feet in length. The facility also has two in ground vehicle hoist with lifting capability of 36,000 lbs and one in ground hoist with lifting capability of 54,000 lbs.The lower section of the facility provides for two "sweeper repair bays," a storage bay for access to bulk oils, greases and oil dry compounds, etc. The remainder part of the building is a body shop / paint booth 45 feet wide by 25 feet in length.

The Service Garage facility is readily accessible to approximately 80% of the Public Service Department. Public Service Transportation, Engineering, and Waste Water Treatment Plant each are located at another location within a three mile radius of the Service Garage.
