Welcome to the Public Service Department

Many of the services provided by the City of Lansing Public Service Department are so routine many neighborhood residents hardly notice them; however, it is the Public Service Department that keeps the City moving, and provides many of the essential services to neighborhoods necessary to maintain a good quality of life. 

The Public Service Department is divided into six operational divisions; Operations and Maintenance Division(O&M), Engineering Division, Wastewater Systems, Business, Permits, and Technology Division, Property Management Division, and Fleet Services Division.

Current Traffic Advisory 

April 4, 2014: The City of Lansing Public Service Department announces that the Moores River Drive Regional Network Connection Project will begin Monday, April 7, 2014. The project is expected to be complete in late October, 2014.

April 21, 2014: The City of Lansing Public Service Department announces that beginning Tuesday, April 22, 2014, Holmes Road, between Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Cedar Street will be closed to through traffic. The closure is being implement to allow for construction and is expected to remain in place until early August.

Operations and Maintenance Division

Get details on public service emergency response operations, street maintenance (repairs, sweeping, and cleaning activities), flood control activities, sanitary sewer maintenance, residential trash and garbage pickup and disposal, collecting and transfer of recyclable materials, winter operations (snow removal, street salting, etc.), parks grounds maintenance and sustaining the urban forest.

Engineering Division

Find out more about the planning, designing, and construction management of streets, bridges, sidewalks, sewer systems, flood control structures, Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) elimination programs, environmental remediation and brownfield redevelopment construction projects, and other special city construction projects.

Wastewater Systems

Get information about the collection, pumping, processing and treatment of the city's wastewater, and compliance with State pollution control regulations and the National Pollutants Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program. This division, in conjunction with the Engineering Division, is also responsible for monitoring the Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) systems. 

Business, Permits and Technology Division

Business - Administrative Support, Budgeting, Traffic Advisories

Permitting - Right of Way, Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control, Sidewalk Café, Special Transportation, Sewer, Sidewalk, Utility permits.

Inspections - All Public Service Permits, Snow on sidewalks, PASER Road Ratings and more.

Property Management Division

Property Management Division was created to provide oversight in managing the City of Lansing's assets such as properties and buildings. The Division is responsible for maintaining about 750 City owned properties and 223 buildings. This included making recommendations to the administration on which properties to purchase or sell, as well as recommendations for maintenance or repair of buildings.
