South Precinct
The Lansing Police Department South Precinct, 3400 S. Cedar Street, is located on the corner of S. Cedar and Holmes. It encompasses 60% of the City of Lansing, roughly 19 square miles. It is bounded by the east, west, and south city limits, with a northern boundary of highway I-496 and the Grand River. There are a total of 79,200 residents living in the South Precinct or 62% of Lansing's population. In addition to the substantial population, South Lansing is the home to the majority of Lansing's businesses. The Captain of the South Precinct is Teresa Szymanski. Capt. Szymanski can be reahed at 517-272-7452, or email to tszymanski@lansingmi.gov. The field lieutenants are each assigned to a shift and are responsible for the day to day operations of that shift. The Day Shift Lieutenant is Jim Kraus. The Afternoon Shift is lead by Lieutenant Tony Nettles. Lieutenant Mike Yankowski is in charge of the Night Shift. All shifts have 18 officers assigned to them.
The South Precinct is broken down into 8 team areas. Team area boundaries were determined by a combination of a number of factors including geographic size; number of calls for service; neighborhood organization boundaries; natural boundaries; and crime rates. Every officer is assigned to a team area and responsible for problem solving, community engagement, and crime reduction. There are 9 Patrol Sergeants assigned to the South Precinct. Three sergeants are assigned each to Day Shift and Night Shift with four sergeants assigned to Afternoon Shift. In addition to shift responsibilities, each sergeant is assigned to a team area. Team Sergeant responsibilities include coordination of problem solving efforts across shifts; identification of crime patterns; development of strategies to suppress crime and reduce repeat calls for service; improvement of citizen satisfaction; involvement of citizens in problem identification and solutions; and community outreach by the team officers.
The South Precinct has 12 detectives and 2 Detective Sergeants who do follow up investigations on crimes that occur. The South Precinct is home to the Capital Area Response Effort (CARE) and the Neighborhood Watch. The Precinct has 3 community rooms and a gymnasium that can be used by the citizens of Lansing free of charge!
