Officer to Officer Mentor Program
The Lansing Police Department Mentor Program is the brainchild of Julie Williams. Having hired 42% of its sworn personnel in the four years prior to 1997, LPD implemented the Mentor Program in 1997 to enhance retention and as a method to systematically share technical knowledge of senior officers with junior officers. The program was so successful and popular that it was expanded in 1998 to the 911 Communications Center to address retention concerns there.
The Mentor Program was recognized as a 2000 IACP Webber Seavey finalist and Julie Williams was honored as the 1999 CJ Women of Michigan Officer of the year for her efforts with the program. By 2001 the Mentor Program was recognized as one of the nation's "Best practices" by the U.S. Department of Justice Policy Link initiative.
