Parks and Trails

The City of Lansing Parks & Recreation Department creates community through people, parks and programs. We strive to improve the overall health and well-being of Lansing residents by providing year-round recreational opportunities in our public parks and special facilities. All programs are open to anyone who wishes to participate, regardless of age or abilities. We also offer free After School Programs with fun and enriching activities for school-aged children.

The Parks & Recreation Department oversees 36 parks and tot-lot playgrounds, including Frances Park and the Cooley Gardens. Our 2000 acres of park land feature more than 46,000 street trees and 250,000 park trees and attractions such as supervised swim areas, picnicking, fishing, pedal, recreational sports areas, playgrounds, and trails.

The mission of the Parks and Recreation Department is to enhance the quality of life through the preservation and maintenance of park lands, the provision of quality leisure time activities, and the provision of special facilities which would otherwise not be available to the Lansing residents. We provide the essential services needed to maintain the park lands and preserve them for future generations.

Trails

Lansing has many trails that surround you with nature and allow you to explore the beauty of the area. Biking and hiking trails of varying lengths and accessibility can be found throughout the city. Located along the picturesque Grand and Red Cedar Rivers, the Lansing River Trail is suitable for walkers and riders of all ages and skill levels. The tree-lined river trail is dotted with scenic overlooks, historic landmarks, and other points of interest. For a more challenging excursion, William Burchfield Park's rugged trails are ideal for mountain biking and hiking.
