Averill Park Clean-Up, November 14, 2009
On Saturday, November 14, 2009, the Averill Woods Neighborhood Association held a clean-up of the Averill Park woods. The project was aimed at clearing paths and establishing wood chipped trails throughout the woods. Assisting the neighborhood association were volunteers from the MSU "Into the Streets" student volunteers. Approximately 60 students participated in the trail project as well as painting the exterior doors on Averill Elementary School, passing out flyers in the neighborhood, and assisting a group of Averill students in completing a mosaic art project to be hung outside the school. Financial/Food sponsors for this project were the MSU Office of Cultural and Academic Transitions, Lansing City Council, Munchies of Lansing, and Biggby's of South Waverly in Lansing. Menards also provided several hand tools and gloves. Lansing Parks and Recreation, specifically the Forestry Division, played a major role in the project. Irene Cahill, Forestry Supervisor, spent many hours assisting the neighborhood association by providing technical assistance in plant identification and trail construction. The department provided rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows and tons of wood chips. Both Irene and Murdock Jemerson, Parks and Recreation Director, were present on Saturday and provided team leadership roles for the MSU students.
