2009 MLK Holiday Luncheon – "A Dream Comes Closer"

This event is sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission-over 25 members on this commission represent City Government, local business/unions, MSU, senior citizens and churches.

Keynote Speaker

Reverend Kenneth J. Flowers, Pastor of Greater New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church of Detroit, Michigan.  Reverend Flowers, a dynamic speaker, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Morehouse College of Atlanta Georgia and a Master of Divinity degree from prestigious Colgate Rochester Divinity School of Rochester, New York.

Reverend Flowers, a much sought after speaker, is a social activist for human rights issues, both nationally and internationally.  In September, 1993 he became the first African American to speak at The World Trade Centre in Johannesburg, South African when he addressed 1,000 community leaders.  Additionally, Reverend Flowers has traveled to Seoul, South Korea to build better relations between Blacks and Koreans and to Israel on four occasions to build better relations between Blacks and Jews.  In January, 2008, Reverend Flowers participated in the African American Leaders Mission to Israel, and was honored as the first American Recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Israel Award. 

Over the years, Reverend Flowers has been the Keynote Speaker for Martin Luther King, Jr. celebrations in a number of venues including Los Angeles, California, Miami, Florida, and New York City, New York. 

Essay/Scholarship

The Commission will sponsor an essay contest for middle school students and a scholarship program for high school seniors.  Information regarding the essay contest and the scholarship program is available at participating middle and senior high schools.
