Mayor Virg Bernero's Initiatives

Mayors and Municipalities Automotive Coalition (MMAC)

In late 2008 Mayor Virg Bernero brought together mayors and municipal leaders from across the nation to advocate for federal bridge loans for the Big Three automakers.  More than two dozen mayors from six states joined Mayor Bernero in Washington, D.C. to lobby the United States Congress to support our domestic car companies and help them compete in the global economy.  From those efforts a new national organization was formed - the Mayors and Municipalities Automotive Coalition (MMAC).  Mayor Bernero says MMAC is continuing to work aggressively to create a new strategic partnership between the federal government, the Big Three automakers and local communities that depend on a healthy, competitive auto industry.

Accelerate Lansing

In 2008 Mayor Bernero pulled together a large number of enthusiastic young people who want to make a difference in Lansing.  The group will help the Mayor stay connected and in touch with issues important to 20 and 30 somethings and take on intiatives and projects relevant to making Lansing a better place.  If you would like to get involved with Accelerate Lansing, please contact the Mayor's Office: mayor@lansingmi.gov or join the facebook group Lansing Advocates for Change to receive updates.

Greater Lansing Go Green Initiative

Mayor Bernero launched the Greater Lansing Go Green Initiative in February 2006 to help transform Lansing into a national leader in renewable resources and energy efficiency.  Under Mayor Bernero's leadership, Lansing became one of the first cities in Michigan to hire a full-time Green Coordinator.  The Mayor's Go Green! initiative is a regional partnership that includes the Lansing Board of Water and Light -- our hometown power company -- and Lansing Community College.  Learn more at gogreengolansing.com!

Office of Community and Faith-based Initiatives

During his first year in office Mayor Bernero established the Mayor's Office of Community and Faith-based Initiatives to form a powerful new partnership between city government and Lansing's faith community.  To date, under the leadership of Bishop David Maxwell, the MOCFBI has played a vital role in coordinating the City's human service activities, promoting minority business enterprises in partnership with the Lansing Economic Development Corporation and organizing Lansing's annual Diversity Festival.
