Class Title: Plant Operations Supervisor  (T580 SUP)

Starting Salary: $19.04/hr to $28.35/hr

Dept/Division: Public Service Wastewater Treatment Plant

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS & TRAINING:  Failure to obtain or maintain job required qualifications would result in appropriate action consistent with the provision of the Appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement or Personnel Rules.

 Requires the ability to work on a 24 hour a day, seven day a week, alternating shift schedule.  Requires ability to be “on call” as necessary.  Michigan Class "C" Wastewater Certification required or equivalency: Applicants without the certification must be eligible in accordance with State Law to write the Class "C" Sewage Plant Operator Certification or must have previously successfully held the position and currently meet the posted education and experience requirements.  Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. May be required to carry a pager, cell phone, and/or radio.

 Must complete Confined Space Training

 EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:  The City of Lansing reserves the right to utilize equivalencies where deemed appropriate with regard to education and experience requirements.

High School Diploma or GED supplemented by college level course work, five (5) years of experience working in a wastewater treatment plant with increasing levels of responsibilities, supervisor experience preferred; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of the different processes of wastewater treatment including the theory, practical application, controls, and impact on other processes, the functions and servicing requirements of wastewater treatment plant equipment and machinery, and the hazards and safety precautions common to wastewater treatment processes. 

Skill in inspecting machinery and mechanical equipment to detect flaws and defects in the operation. Skill in reading and interpreting meters and graphs, and maintaining records of shift operations. Must possess basic computer skills; including keyboard and mouse functions, basic word processing and spreadsheet development skills.

 Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to establishes and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and other City employees.

Must be dependable and possess a good work record. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires the individual through assistance or on their own to walk, climb, sit, stand, reach, bend, stoop, listen, smell, have visual acuity, and lift up to 50 lbs occasionally.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS REQUIREMENTS:

Work is in a wastewater treatment plant; inside and outside during all weather conditions, subject to extreme cold, sudden temperature changes, high humidity, dust, dirt, offensive odors, some loud noise area and possibly hazardous atmospheres.  Must work with raw and partially treated sewage and with a wide range of mechanical equipment.
