Job Shadow Day

Event Vision
The objective behind this event has two initiatives: one, to give the student participants a glimpse of a day in the life of a "real world" professional in the field of their interest and two, to create a contact for each student to use as a mentor, reference or possible future employer. Linking Lansing & U believes that this interaction with someone that is living their dream in reality will push the students to a successful career in the future. The day will also show the participants the possibilities that lie within the City of Lansing.
Event Execution
In preparation for the Job Shadow Day the Linking Lansing & U team registers both students and businesses that are interested in the program. From here we go forward and match the students with a professional that we believe will be a compatible counterpart for the day. These matches will correlate with each student's field of interest. The day of the event will entail the students participating in either full or half day shadows, dressed for the job. The student will watch the day to day activities of the professional while learning about the field and the internal workings of the position. This is in hopes of preparing the student for a career in this industry while allowing them to get a taste of what it takes for success. The day is ended with a reception for all the students and the professionals to mix and mingle about their day. The reception is hosted by Linking Lansing & U along with the Mayor's Office.
Numbers
In its initial year the Job Shadow Day was incredibly successful. The spring session hosted 135 students and 25 businesses. There was a second more specialized fall session that targeted the MSU colleges of Communication Arts and The College of Arts and Letters. For the future of this event we expect to grow in both the student and professional side.
