Mayor Virg Bernero

The Human Relations and Community Services Department pursues City Charter and Ordinance mandates to address human services needs in the Lansing area and help cultivate a community climate of diversity, equity and nondiscrimination.  Pursuant to these mandates, the Department performs numerous functions that seek to improve the quality of life for all Lansing citizens.

The Department's Human Services focus includes assessing community needs, developing grant proposals and related programs based on identified needs, providing support for local nonprofit service providers through funding agreements, monitoring City-funded programs and providing technical assistance to agency funding recipients.

Human Relations activities include neighborhood dispute mediation, investigation of citizen complaints against police personnel, enforcing Davis Bacon Prevailing Wage laws (local and federal), monitoring City government EEO compliance, and participation in community groups addressing a wide range of social equity concerns.

The Department also provides leadership in broad-based community initiatives such as resolution of homelessness, organizing health care access for uninsured residents, infant mortality prevention, juvenile delinquency and drug abuse prevention, and refugee resettlement.  A complete, detailed description of departmental functions and related information can be accessed through the subject links found on this page.
