Go Green! Tip of the Week:
- Use public transit; it is viewed as 170 times safer than car travel according to the National Safety Council. It also saves you money, riding the bus can save an average household over $6,000 on automobile exspenses per year. Of course, it is also better for the environment; a bus with as few as seven passengers can be more fuel efficient in terms of passenger miles per gallon than a single-occupant vehicle used for commuting.
- Ride your bike to work; 50% of all trips are 3 miles or less, a perfect distance for a bike ride. If you're looking to get in shape this summer as well, a leisurely 60 minute bike ride can burn 500 calories.
- Prevent approximately 730 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere, go for a family walk instead of a drive. Walking also leads to a decrease in the likelihood of obesity , heart disease, and other health problems.
Allen Neighborhood Center's Youth Service Corps.
They also work in the Gardenhouse to grow food to give away at the ANC's Bread Basket program and to sell at their Farmer's Market and to local chefs. These motivated kids also do service work like delivering newsletters and doing yard work for local neighbors. Members of the Youth Service Corps are rewarded for their service as well with regular trips to local attractions and events.
