Greater Lansing Go Green! Initiative

Mayor Virg Bernero

COMMIT NOW TO HELP LANSING GO GREEN!

Mayor Virg Bernero's Greater Lansing Go Green! Initiative is working to promote environmental and economic health for all those who live, work, and play in Greater Lansing.

As the report card shows, Lansing’s schools, residents and businesses are playing an important role in protecting the local environment.  Fifteen Lansing schools have earned the Michigan Green School designation due to their efforts to reduce energy use, increase recycling and involve students in hands-on environmental learning.  In addition, over 200 businesses have signed on to the Go Green! Business Pledge and over 15,000 residents have taken the Go Green! Personal Pledge.

Lansing is also making tremendous progress in protecting water quality.  Once the Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) program is completed, 1.65 billion gallons of combined sewage will be prevented from release into the Grand and Red Cedar Rivers.

In addition to water savings, the community has also saved over 12 million kilowatt hours of electricity.  This savings is thanks in large part to the innovative efforts of the Lansing Board of Water & Light’s Hometown Energy Savers Program.  Hometown Energy Savers provides incentives, rebates, and education in order to help residents reduce their energy use.  The City of Lansing’s Planning and Development Department’s Energy Fitness program, conducted with the help of Michigan Energy Options has also played an important role in these kilowatt savings.

Lansing is also leading the way in recycling.  Since launching single-stream collection, recycling has increased by 38%, which will result in the collection of at least 2400 tons of material each year.  Collectively, all of these efforts are saving the Greater Lansing area over 30,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year.
