Living Wage
The City of Lansing in partnership with the business community recognizes the need to facilitate economic development in our community. As part of the economic growth strategy, the City has incorporated Local Preference, Supplier Diversity and Living Wage into the City Purchasing policies.
The Council's Living Wage Ordinance provides opportunities for service contract employees hired by the City to earn an hourly wage sufficient to enable families to live at or above the federal poverty level.
The City of Lansing's Human Relations and Community Services Department calculates the Living Wage in February of each year. The Department issues an annual bulletin stating the Living Wage for the year. The Department also has a letter outlining the process used to calculate the Living Wage.
Highlights of the Ordinance:
- Applies to service contracts greater than $50,000.
- The wage rate is equal to the Federal Poverty Guideline as determined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
- The Living Wage for 2005 is $12.09/hour.
