Derrick Quinney was appointed by the Lansing City Council to fulfill the remainder of the term for the vacated At Large Council seat, once held by Joan Bauer, on January 29, 2007.  Elected by the people in 2008, he has been able to focus his efforts toward enhancing the quality of life for the citizens of Lansing. In 2009, his fellow Councilmembers appointed him as President of the Lansing City Council.

Derrick has lived in Lansing most of his life.  He is a proud product of Lansing Public Schools, where he met his wife of thirty years.  He and Desiree are the proud parents of two children and two grandchildren.

As the Health and Safety Director for the Michigan State AFL-CIO since 2001, he provides statewide workplace Safety Training Programs.  He is the State President of the A. Philip Randolph Institute, a member of the United Auto Workers and the Old News Boys, former member of the Ergonomics Standard Advisory Committee, and a Lansing Police Commissioner.

Volunteering is an integral part of Derrick’s life; he is an enthusiastic advocate and volunteer for the local United Way Campaign and the Mobile Food Pantry.
