What is An Emergency Notification System?
An Emergency Notification System is a system, which allows government entities to contact citizens in the event of an emergency in their area. The system has several different methods of contacting citizens including traditional residential landlines, business lines, voice pagers, VoIP or digital "cable" phones, and cell phones.
Does the City of Lansing and Ingham County Have Emergency Notification System?
Yes. The City of Lansing and Ingham County have contracted with Emergency Communications Network, Inc., of Ormond Beach, Florida, for its "CodeRED®" high-speed telephone emergency notification services. The CodeRED® system gives the County 911 Center the ability to deliver pre-recorded emergency telephone notification/information messages at a rate of 1,000 calls per minute – on average.
How Can I Be Certain I can be Contacted?
CodeRED® updates the System several times a year using multiple national phone listing databases and current 911 Center data. If your phone number is unlisted, you have recently moved, or if you only have a cellular phone, we may not have your information. Even if you have a listed home phone number, you should still register. To add your contact information to the CodeRED® system, go to http://www.ingham.org/sh/emergencyalert.html or www.lansingmi.gov/emergencyalert if in the City of Lansing.
Does Code Red Support TTY for the Hearing Impaired?
Yes. Please go to www.ingham.org/sh/emergencyalert or www.lansingmi.gov/emergencyalert if in the City of Lansing. When completing the online form you must click on the TTY option on the bottom of the page.
What Information Do I Need to Supply?
Since the CodeRED® system works on geographical location, you must enter your address, city, and zip code into the system. This means that if there is an emergency situation in Ingham County or the City of Lansing, we can notify the residents in this area only.
Do I have to pay extra for CodeRED® service?
No. CodeRED® is entirely paid for under a grant from the US Department of Homeland Security.
Does this mean the County will be calling me constantly?
No. Ingham County and the City of Lansing respects your privacy. CodeRED® will be used only when situations arise that you should know about.
Can I arrange to have CodeRED® call my place of business?
Yes. Please go to www.ingham.org/sh/emergencyalert or www.lansingmi.gov/emergencyalert if in the City of Lansing. When the Residential Data Collection form opens, click on the button labeled “Click to Switch to Business Data” and fill in the required information. Please note that emergency calls can only be delivered to a direct dial number. Automated attendants will disrupt the process and calls will not be delivered.
Is this service available to ONLY Lansing and Ingham County residents?
Yes. You must live in, or operate a business in, the City of Lansing or Ingham County in order to receive Emergency Notifications through CodeRED. Those outside of those areas must contact their local Emergency Management Office to find out what emergency notification system they are using.
