The Staff Services Division's primary mission is to provide administrative and operational expertise to staff and citizens. The Division manages the following units: Detention Center, Criminal Records, Budget Control, Public Information, Electronic Equipment Maintenance Unit (EEMU), Property and Supply Unit, Training Unit, Recruitment, Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) and Volunteer Services Units. The Staff Services Division encompasses a workforce of experts that strive for customer service excellence and the implementation of leading best practices in modern police administration.
Detention Center – Located in our Headquarters (120 W. Michigan Ave) this unit is responsible for the safe, legitimate and humane custody of inmates that are lodged in our facility.
Criminal Records – Administers all Freedom of Information Act requests through our records management system, compiles statistics for FBI Uniform Crime Reporting, biometric analysis, criminal history checks and firearm registrations.
Budget Control – Maintains employee payroll, grant compliance and the overall fiscal management of the police budget.
EEMU – Installs and maintains all FCC radio communication systems and vehicle/ building video recording and access equipment.
Property and Supply – Ensures the integrity of seized or recovered evidence, manages property auction/destruction, inventory or return to citizens. The unit further researches and purchases police equipment for all operational units.
Training – Provides continued education and training for the following training subjects: defensive tactics, firearms and other sworn officer and civilian training needs. The unit is also responsible for the creation and implementation of written policies and procedures authorized by the Chief of Police.
Recruitment – Responsible for attracting qualified applicants for various police department positions.
G.R.E.A.T. – The G.R.E.A.T. program teaches Lansing School District students a school based curriculum that develops positive life skills to resist criminal activity. The unit's Sports mobile further engages the community through various youth sporting activities and events.
Volunteer Services – Volunteers assist with the following duties: handicap parking, front desk reporting, River Patrol, Victim Advocates and the Capitol Area Response Effort relating to Domestic Violence.
