Office of the City Attorney
Welcome to our website. The Office of the City Attorney serves as a public "law firm" for the City of Lansing. Our goal is to equal or exceed the legal abilities of any respected private law firm in the State and to be the best possible "law firm" to the City.
Thank you for visiting our website. If you cannot find what you need here, please contact me personally.
Sincerely,
Brig Smith
City Attorney

Who's The Boss?

The Thomas M. Cooley Journal of Practical and Clinical Law has published City Attorney Brig Smith's law review article, "Who's The Boss? Deciding Who the Client Is When You're a City Attorney."
The article weighs the practical, political, and ethical considerations at play when you are responsible both to the Mayor and the City Council, but at the end of the day have as your client the City itself.
City Attorney Named "Rising Star" by Super Lawyers
For the second year in a row, City Attorney Brig Smith has been named a "Rising Star" by Super Lawyers magazine. Super Lawyers recognizes outstanding lawyers in each state, as nominated by their peers. He has also been named the first-ever "Young Public Lawyer of the Year" by the International Municipal Lawyers Association and one of the region's "Ten Over the Next Ten Years" by the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. While recognition is on an individual basis, it is really a testament to the outstanding members of the OCA team.
