Residences

If you own and occupy your residence, it is exempt from the 18 mill school operating tax. On a house that is worth $60,000 and a taxable value of $30,000 the savings to you would be $540 per year.

If you would like to verify that our records correctly identify your house as a homeowners principal residence you may do so on the City of Lansing Internet Services website or for additional information please visit our Property Information page.

To claim an exemption, complete the Homeowners Principal Residence Form and file it with the City Assessor by May 1. If you qualify the City Assessor will adjust your taxes on your next property tax bill. Note that this is an exemption for part of your taxes, not from your taxable value.

You are required to file a principal residence rescind form when you no longer own and occupy the property as your principal residence.  The exemption will be removed December 31st of the year you rescind the exemption.

Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view the Homeowners Principal Residence Form.  If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader you can download it for free at http://get.adobe.com/reader/
