How to Mulch a Tree
How Deep Should the Mulch Be?
If you apply four inches of most types of bark mulch over the entire planting hole it will compact to a depth of between two and three inches. This depth is usually adequate to prevent weeds from growing. Wood mulch has the additional benefit of reducing water evaporation from the soil which helps keep the soil around the roots moist.
How Wide of a Mulch Ring Should I Make?
Apply mulch over the entire planting hole area. DO NOT PUT ANY MULCH NEXT TO THE TREE TRUNK - THIS CAUSES TREE ROT. When applying mulch to an established tree you may make the mulch ring as large or small as you like. We normally apply a six foot diameter circle of mulch around an established tree but the larger the area covered the better
