Burn Permits

Recreational Burn Permits are now available to purchase for $50. Permit is valid April 1 - March 31. We now offer three easy ways to apply and pay: online, mail, and in person.

Online


Apply and pay online by completing the Burn Permit Online Application. Scroll to the bottom of the application click on the button to apply and pay online.

Mail


To renew your permit by mail please complete, sign, and return the Burn Permit Application Form (PDF), along with the fee of $50. Make check or money order payable to City of Lansing and mail to:

Permit Requirements


Please remember the following requirements when applying for the Recreational Burn Permit:
  • Burning is allowed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 5 p.m. - Midnight and the following holidays during the week: Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day.
  • Burning of brush, leaves, grass or trash is strictly prohibited.
  • Burning of building material or non-wood items is strictly prohibited.
  • The fire must be continuously attended.
  • Fires in approved containers are required to be at least 15 feet from any structure.
  • Fires in an in-ground pit are required to be 25 feet from any structure.
  • The Lansing Fire Department reserves the right to revoke any Recreational Burn Permit for violation of any of the above regulations and or Fire Code.
  • Permit is strictly for recreational purposes only.
  • A water source must be readily available.
