From the Director's Desk.....
As we enter into our fall season of activities, the Department of Parks and Recreation is very excited about its new facilities and programs. First, construction on the new Southside Community Center addition will be completed and open to the public October 29th. This area will feature a new lobby, staff offices, restrooms and utility areas. Major features of Southside Community Center include a gymnasium, swimming pool, auditorium, and community and games rooms. For more information on programs offered at the Southside Community Center, contact either our main office at 483-4277 or the Southside Community Center at 483-6685.
Next, Gier Community Center is set to re-open its newly renovated and expanded gymnasium on October 30th. The gymnasium has been expanded an additional 3,000 square feet to provide room for bleachers that will seat approximately 300 spectators. The main basketball court will also be completed with new glass backboards. The gymnasium will resume its regular schedule of activities and is available for rentals. And finally, we are pleased to offer two new opportunities to get fit by walking or jogging our new trails at Davis and Frances Parks. The Davis Park Trail is 8 feet wide and .65 miles long. The three quarter mile trail at Frances Park takes you around the playing field, ravine and through the woods along Moores River Drive.We encourage you to contact us and tell us how we are doing and how we can improve our services to you. The First Tee of Mid Michigan
The First Tee of Mid-Michigan completed its second season of introducing the game of golf and important life skills to over 1,355 mid-Michigan area children this year. With the skillful leadership of Program Coordinator, Ron Applegate and his coaching assistants, these children are well on their way to being well-trained in the game of golf and more importantly they are ready to become productive and responsible citizens. Also, over 363 children participated in Saturday clinics, after-school and summer programs. Nineteen (19) participants became certified" Players in the First Tee Curriculum.
Also, the First Tee of Mid-Michigan will introduce its newest Executive Director, John Greenslit, to the Board of Directors at the meeting on October 21, 2009. Other agenda items include; the introduction of John Lindert as a new board member, the presentation of a memorial plaque to the family of Sherrill Pittman, and recognition of WalMart and Jackson National Life Insurance Company for their contributions this year.
